A New STEM School In The Hills Above Marbella

Creators International School opened its doors in September, becoming the newest addition to the cluster of international schools that has grown up around Benahavís and Marbella over the past two decades. The school follows the British curriculum with a specialist focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and it arrives after more than two years of licensing delays that its founding director has described candidly as the product of bureaucracy rather than any shortage of ambition.

Families already weighing up property for sale in Benahavís now have another reason to look closely at the area, since school quality is consistently one of the first questions relocating families ask and one of the hardest to answer well on this coast. A specialist STEM school with capped class sizes is a meaningfully different offer to the broader international schools already established in the area, and it fills a gap that several parents in the local expatriate community had been asking about for years.

The school’s own mission statement, to develop innovators, leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs and global citizens of the future, sounds like the kind of language every new school reaches for. What makes it worth taking seriously here is the specificity behind it: a curriculum timetable built explicitly around STEM subjects rather than a standard British curriculum with a STEM label attached as an afterthought.

The Costa del Sol’s international school sector has grown steadily for decades, serving a resident population of relocating families from across Europe and beyond, yet genuine subject specialism of this kind has been rare. Most schools in the area offer a broad, well regarded British or international curriculum without leaning hard into any particular academic direction. A STEM specific alternative gives parents choosing between schools in Benahavís, Marbella and Estepona a genuinely different option rather than a variation on the same theme.

Joseph Short And The Idea Behind The School

The school’s founding director is Joseph Short, who began teaching at 22 in an inner city Liverpool school before moving into international education, where he taught in Seville, Murcia and Marbella and rose steadily into leadership roles. He was recruited to found Creators after the school’s owner, whose children Short had taught at his previous Marbella school, approached him with the idea.

Short has been clear that his own motivation is educational rather than commercial. He has described his goal as financial stability rather than profit, and has said plainly that he is not a businessman but an educator, with the school standing apart from any wider chain. That distinction matters to parents who have grown wary of international schools run primarily as investment vehicles, where class sizes creep upward once the enrolment numbers look healthy.

His own background, a Liverpool state school classroom rather than a private international circuit, gives the project a slightly different flavour to some of the longer established schools on this coast. It is also a reminder that Benahavís and Marbella’s international school sector, for all its reputation as a cluster of expensive options for wealthy relocating families, still draws its leadership from people who started out teaching in considerably less glamorous settings.

The more than two years of licensing delays Short has spoken about are a familiar story to anyone who has tried to open a new institution of any kind on this coast, where planning and licensing processes can move considerably slower than the ambitions behind a project. That the school persisted through that process and still opened with a full academic offer in September, rather than scaling back to a smaller soft launch, suggests the backing behind it was patient enough to see the delays through rather than cut corners to open sooner.

The Curriculum And Class Sizes

Creators serves pupils from age 7 to 18, with the first intake starting at Year 7, for children aged 11 and above. Class sizes are capped at 12 pupils, a figure the school repeats consistently across its own materials and one that sets it apart from the larger international schools in the area, where class sizes can run considerably higher even at the premium end of the market.

The timetable allocates more than 22 hours a week to specialised STEM subjects. Key Stage 3 pupils take ten maths lessons a week, plus four each of biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and ICT, alongside English, Spanish, humanities, art and music to round out a broader education. Older students work towards IGCSEs and GCSEs before moving into A-Levels, with sixth form pathways in engineering, finance, medicine and computer science, plus an Extended Project Qualification for students who want to pursue independent research before university.

That is an unusually dense STEM timetable for a school this size, and it signals a clear bet on where the demand sits. International families relocating to this coast increasingly include parents working in technology, finance and engineering themselves, and a school built explicitly to prepare their children for the same fields is a logical response to who is actually moving here.

The staffing behind that timetable matters as much as the subjects on it. The school has recruited 15 fully qualified teachers, several holding master’s degrees and two holding doctorates, a staff to pupil ratio that a cap of 12 per class makes considerably easier to sustain than it would be in a school running 20 or more pupils per room. Smaller classes are frequently promised and less frequently delivered once enrolment pressure builds, so the structural commitment to that number is worth noting on its own.

Admissions And Scholarships

Admissions at Creators are selective rather than open enrolment. Prospective pupils sit a maths entrance test followed by a further assessment with the principal, a process that signals the school intends to maintain its academic profile from the outset rather than filling places first and sorting standards out later.

The school has also built in financial support alongside that selectivity. Academic scholarships, STEM bursaries and grants for international students are all available, with two full scholarships specifically earmarked for families who may need extra support to afford fees. That combination, selective entry paired with meaningful bursary provision, is a more thoughtful admissions model than simply pricing a school at the top of the market and leaving it there.

It also signals how the school wants to be perceived locally. A purely fee driven admissions model would have been the simpler route for a new school trying to establish itself quickly, and the decision to build in scholarships from the outset, rather than adding them once the school is established, suggests the founders are thinking about the school’s reputation over a longer horizon than a single opening term.

A Former Hotel Reimagined

The school is housed in a former four star hotel, a building that gives it a head start most new schools do not get. Grounds include a heated pool described as almost Olympic-style, alongside specialist science and technology areas, arts facilities, a theatre, a gym and a basketball court. Converting hotel infrastructure into school facilities is a pattern that has worked well elsewhere on this coast, where the Costa del Sol’s dense stock of hospitality buildings occasionally offers exactly the kind of large, well built premises a growing school needs.

The choice also says something about the pace of change in this part of Benahavís. A four star hotel finding a new life as a school, with specialist labs and a theatre built into spaces that once held guest rooms and conference facilities, reflects a broader pattern across this coast where buildings adapt to new uses as the area’s permanent population of families grows alongside its tourist numbers.

It is also a more efficient use of capital than building from scratch. A hotel of that scale already comes with the kitchens, plumbing, electrical capacity and structural footprint a school needs, which lets a project like this open with a complete set of facilities in its first term rather than phasing them in gradually over several years while construction continues around existing pupils.

Boarding From 2027

Boarding is not yet available, but the school has confirmed plans to open dormitories for up to 100 pupils from September 2027, housed in what were formerly well appointed, en suite hotel rooms. That timeline gives the school a full academic year to establish its day school reputation before taking on the added complexity of residential pupils.

A boarding option, once it arrives, will put Creators in a different category to most of the day schools already serving this coast, and it is likely to draw interest from families based further afield who want their children educated in this specific STEM focused environment without relocating the whole household permanently. For now, the day school model gives local families in Benahavís, Marbella and the surrounding area first access to the limited places available, which is likely to keep demand for that first intake considerably ahead of supply.

Why Schools Like This Matter To Benahavís Buyers

School quality rarely shows up directly in a sale price, but it shapes buyer decisions more than almost any other single factor once children are involved. A family choosing between otherwise similar properties in Benahavís and a neighbouring municipality will often let proximity to a preferred school settle the decision, and a new, well resourced STEM school changes that calculation for anyone with children interested in science, technology or engineering.

Our guide to Benahavís already covers the municipality’s existing strengths for relocating families, from its gated communities to its proximity to both the coast and Marbella itself. A STEM specialist school with capped class sizes adds a genuinely new dimension to that pitch, rather than simply duplicating what the area’s other international schools already offer.

The timing is also notable. Families relocating with secondary school age children often face the narrowest window of any buyer segment, since a move has to line up with an academic year and a school place has to be secured before a property search can really begin in earnest. A new school opening with places still available removes one of the biggest scheduling constraints those families normally face, and it is reasonable to expect that to translate into faster decisions on the property side as well.

Benahavís’s Wider International Draw

Creators arrives in a municipality that has been pulling in international wealth at a striking pace. Our recent coverage of Benahavís’s rise to become Spain’s second richest municipality and the town’s position in the premium end of the market, covered in our piece on Benahavís property prices around Coto and La Zagaleta, both point to the same underlying trend: a small municipality absorbing an outsized share of the Costa del Sol’s wealthiest new residents.

A specialist school is the kind of infrastructure that trend eventually demands, since families moving serious capital into an area tend to ask serious questions about where their children will be educated. Our Benahavís property market report tracks the transaction data behind that wealth concentration each quarter, and a new school of this calibre is exactly the sort of addition that tends to reinforce demand rather than simply follow it.

Schools, hospitals and infrastructure rarely make headlines the way a new luxury development does, yet they tend to matter more to the families actually deciding where to put down roots. Creators International School is unlikely to move Benahavís’s average price per square metre on its own, but it adds one more reason for a family with school age children to choose the municipality over a neighbouring one, and those reasons compound over years rather than showing up in a single quarter’s figures.
