Spain’s Tourism Engine Accelerates in 2026 as High-Spending International Demand Reshapes the Market

Spain’s tourism engine continues gaining momentum in 2026, but the most important story is no longer simply how many people are arriving. It is how much they are spending once they get there. According to the latest tourism data released through INE’s Frontur and Egatur reports, Spain welcomed more than 17.5 million international visitors during the first quarter of 2026, a 2.5% increase compared to the same period last year. However, visitor spending surged by 6.3% during the same timeframe, reaching more than €25 billion.

Spain is increasingly transitioning away from a volume-driven tourism model towards a higher-value international visitor economy, and nowhere is that shift more visible than Marbella and the Costa del Sol.

Spain’s tourism market is becoming more valuable

Spain’s tourism sector has firmly moved beyond post-pandemic recovery mode. The latest figures suggest the country is now entering a structurally different phase of growth where revenue per visitor increasingly matters more than raw arrival numbers.

International tourism spending rose nearly three times faster than visitor growth during the first quarter of 2026, reinforcing the idea that Spain is attracting a more affluent international traveller profile. Travellers are staying longer, booking earlier, prioritising safety and increasingly focusing on curated experiences over mass-market tourism. At the same time, geopolitical instability in competing regions is redirecting demand towards destinations viewed as stable, connected and lifestyle-oriented.

Managing Partner James Evans notes, “The strongest tourism markets globally today are not necessarily the ones attracting the most visitors, but the ones attracting the highest quality of spend. Marbella sits directly inside that trend.”

Spain’s tourism engine

Why visitor spending matters more than visitor numbers

The broader economic implications are substantial as tourism already accounts for approximately 12.6% of Spain’s GDP, generating more than €200 billion in economic activity annually. But the current growth pattern suggests the economic quality of tourism itself is improving.

Luxury hospitality, branded residences, gastronomy, retail, wellness, private transport, cultural tourism and real estate all benefit disproportionately from affluent international visitors compared to traditional mass tourism. This is especially relevant for Marbella and the Costa del Sol, where the distinction between tourism and residential investment has become increasingly blurred.

Many visitors are no longer arriving solely for short-term holidays. Increasingly, they are testing lifestyle compatibility, exploring residency options or evaluating second-home ownership opportunities while travelling.

Spain high-spending tourism 2026

Andalucía and the Costa del Sol continue outperforming

Among Spain’s strongest-performing regions, Andalucía continues gaining momentum. International arrivals into Andalucía rose by 5.9% during the first quarter of 2026, significantly outperforming broader national growth levels.

Marbella’s hospitality sector continues expanding aggressively, luxury hotel repositionings are accelerating, branded residence developments are multiplying and infrastructure investment remains strong despite wider macroeconomic uncertainty. Importantly, Andalucía also benefits from a more diversified tourism structure than many competing Mediterranean destinations. The region combines beach tourism, golf, gastronomy, culture, wellness, luxury hospitality and increasingly remote-work migration into a single ecosystem.

This creates a far more resilient economic base than destinations dependent on short-term seasonal demand alone.

The rise of affluent long-haul travel markets

One of the most significant shifts in Spain’s tourism profile is the rise of long-haul and high-spending international markets. The United States continues emerging as one of Spain’s most valuable tourism segments, supported by expanded direct air connectivity and strong demand for cultural, culinary and lifestyle-led travel. Swiss travellers also remain particularly important due to consistently high spending levels and low price sensitivity.

Meanwhile, Canada, Brazil and China are increasingly viewed as strategic growth markets for Spain’s premium tourism sector over the medium term. They typically stay longer, spend more per day and favour premium hospitality, fine dining, branded experiences and luxury residential environments.

Alina Nouaimeh comments, “The luxury segment in Marbella today is becoming increasingly global. Buyers and visitors are arriving from markets that historically had very little exposure to the Costa del Sol.”

Luxury hospitality and branded residences fuel the shift

The evolution of Spain’s tourism economy is closely linked to the rapid expansion of branded hospitality and residential concepts. Across Marbella, Ibiza, Mallorca and the wider Mediterranean coastline, luxury hotels, branded residences and integrated lifestyle destinations continue attracting substantial international capital.

This reflects a broader global trend where affluent travellers increasingly seek environments offering hospitality, wellness, privacy, architecture and residential ownership opportunities within a single ecosystem. Marbella has become one of Europe’s clearest examples of this transformation. Projects connected to international fashion brands, ultra-prime hospitality operators and globally recognised lifestyle concepts continue outperforming traditional residential and hospitality formats.

Spain’s tourism growth story is increasingly becoming a wealth and lifestyle story rather than simply a numbers story. Marbella now sits directly at the centre of that transition, where luxury hospitality, international mobility and high-end real estate continue converging faster than anywhere else in Southern Europe.
