Work has officially begun on a new section of Estepona’s renowned coastal pathway, further enhancing the town’s reputation as one of the Costa del Sol’s most walkable and scenic destinations. The latest extension focuses on Section 14, connecting Playa de Baños with Matas Verdes through a 575-metre wooden boardwalk.
This project, with a budget of nearly €580,000, is being carried out by a local Malaga-based contractor. Early works include clearing and preparing the route, which will soon link up seamlessly with existing pathways at Punta de Baños–Casasola and Playa del Saladillo. Once complete, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy almost uninterrupted access along more than 21 kilometres of coastline.
The mayor of Estepona has highlighted this project as a sustainable urban initiative, preserving the beauty of the coast while improving public access. The Senda Litoral coastal path is already celebrated for promoting outdoor living, healthy lifestyles, and tourism, and this new stretch only strengthens that appeal.
However, the project has also raised environmental concerns. Local groups and opposition parties have questioned its impact on the unique Atlantic dune ecosystem, which is home to protected plant species and underwater seagrass beds. There are calls for stricter oversight to ensure these habitats are not harmed during construction.
Despite these concerns, the vision remains clear: to create a continuous, well-connected coastal corridor running from Costa Natura to Benamara. Alongside the pathway works, Estepona is investing in electrification and solar lighting for many sections, as well as improving access roads and exploring future extensions toward Guadalmina.
For property owners and buyers, the continued development of Estepona’s coastal path enhances the area’s value. Homes near these walkways benefit from direct access to the beach and promenade, making them more attractive both as personal residences and rental investments.
As the town edges closer to completing this ambitious project, Estepona continues to set itself apart as a destination that combines natural beauty, sustainability, and modern urban living.
