The historic Marbella Lighthouse, a fixture of the town’s coastline since 1864, is entering the final phase of its comprehensive restoration. This iconic maritime structure, which has stood for over 160 years, is being carefully restored to preserve its architectural and cultural heritage while preparing it for future use as a public-facing space.
Located just steps from the Paseo Marítimo, the lighthouse has been inactive for years, closed to the public and in need of urgent repair. Now, under the management of the Port Authority of Málaga, the project is bringing new life to one of Marbella’s most recognisable landmarks. Works are being carried out by the company Servisar, and the project is expected to conclude by early August.
The restoration focuses on structural reinforcement, facade conservation, and the complete refurbishment of the interior. Special care is being taken to maintain the lighthouse’s original character while adapting it to modern safety and accessibility standards. Once finished, the space is expected to be used for cultural or municipal activities, offering residents and visitors a unique venue with views over the Mediterranean.
With the works now more than halfway complete, scaffolding currently covers the lighthouse as specialists work on its dome and external finishes. The project reflects a broader initiative to revitalise and protect Marbella’s historical coastal identity, aligning with other urban improvements taking place along the seafront and harbour.
The reopening of the Marbella Lighthouse will not only return a piece of the town’s maritime history to public view but also add another cultural attraction to the city’s expanding offer. Its integration into the Paseo Marítimo circuit will further enhance the area’s appeal, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists enjoying the coastal promenade.
As Marbella continues to blend modern development with preservation of its heritage, the lighthouse stands as a symbol of both its seafaring past and its commitment to a culturally rich future.
